Phil Mehrtens got more than a pint

Phil Mehrtens got more than a pint of his favourite Hook Norton beer Old Hooky when he cycled to the brewery in North Oxfordshire – he received a cheque for £250 too. Phil, who owns the Shaven Crown Hotel in High Street, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire had recently successfully undertaken a three day charity bike ride from London to Paris raising money for Christian Aid. He had set himself a target of £2,000 and through the generosity of his friends, family and customers had raised £2,598.05.

Unknown to him the staff and the Hook Norton Brewery had raised an additional £250, making his final total £2,848.05. Phil said: “I cannot thank people enough for making their donations. My business is food And drink, and raising money for Christian Aid seemed right because of the work it does to provide people in poverty with food and drink.”

“For two decades I have been lucky enough to lead an extremely decadent and hedonistic life, enjoying many things that I had come to take for granted, such as good living, foreign travel, and always being able to drink and eat whatever I want, whenever I want. “I now I’ve been able to provide some of life’s essentials for some of the people across the globe who don’t get to enjoy a world where they don’t worry about what’s for dinner?”
